Horsing Around on St Croix

May 21, 2014 by Cindy @ MyStCroix.VI 1 Comment

horsing-riding-stcroix

It had been about 15 years since I’d been on a horse and I’m not going to lie, I was nervous! I’d spent my childhood riding at any opportunity I could get. In college and after, I worked in several barns and rode quite a bit. But, when getting ready to move to St Croix in 2001 I sold my saddle and hadn’t ridden since. I missed it, but didn’t realize how much until I met Jennifer from Cruzan Cowgirls Horse Rescue and Horseback Riding Tours.I had heard about Jennifer’s efforts at rescuing unwanted horses from the race track and local owners and had seen posts on Facebook from several of my friends. Being a former horse person, and long-time resident I spent some time observing before getting too excited. But the more I saw, the more I was impressed.  I reached out to Jennifer to add her organization to My-StCroix.com‘s tour operator listings and was thrilled when she invited me out to ride with her. Since I had some experience (though it had been awhile) we decided to head out on an unofficial ride and I used it as an opportunity to interview her and find out about her program. What an exciting day it turned out to be!

Jumping way back in my college days
Jumping way back in my college days at UMASS Amhert’s Hadley Farm.

I met up with Jennifer and her son Jace who helps her out on rides. She trailored three horses over to Rainbow Beach and we headed out from there. I got to ride and bond with Yoshi – a gelding she had purchased/rescued from the race track. In his former life, Yoshi had been a work horse at the track, but apparently he didn’t take too well to the thoroughbreds and had outlived his usefulness. Jennifer saw him out behind the track, inquired about him and the rest is history. It’s how she has obtained most of her horses and what really impressed me about her. She has a laid back and friendly nature and rather than battling the local horse culture, she’s embraced it and learned about it. She’s made friends at the track and respectfully offers to purchase horses that may otherwise be unwanted. Then, she takes the time to rehabilitate and train them using Natural Horsemanship Training principles. Basically, Jennifer is a horse whisperer and if you get a chance to ride with her, you’ll see what I mean!

cruzan-cowgirls-my-stcroix1

But, back to the ride… we started out taking a walk up the beach which was is still breathtaking to me even though I live here. We then made our way up Creque Dam Road, passing by the Lawaetz Museum. I’ve traveled this road a million times by car – but traveling up through the “rainforest” on horseback at a slower pace allowed me the time to really enjoy the scenery and notice more of the beauty of the West End. The quiet of the forest and the beauty of the sun shining through the canopy was mesmerizing. We took the long way and rode down some roads I hadn’t traveled before, passing friendly neighbors and other horses out in the pasture. After living here for fourteen years, it was all so new to me and I loved every minute.

cruzan-cowgirls-my-stcroix2

Once we made it back to the beach, I got the true thrill of riding Yoshi into the ocean. It was so fun to have him pawing at the water like a kid and then swimming underneath me. Truthfully at one point I thought he may roll in the water, but he was just a little off balance from a wave. However, I jumped off and ended up swimming along side him. I couldn’t have been happier in that moment!

Me and Yoshi just before the swim

Since that day, I’ve gotten the chance to spend some more time with Jennifer and her family out at the “farm” where she keeps eleven horses along with a menagerie of other rescued animals (since December 2013 she and her family have rescued a total of 52 animals including horses, goats, chickens, bottle fed kittens, dogs and more). Profits from Cruzan Cowgirls Horseback Riding Tours are used to purchase feed, supplies, medical needs and more for the Cruzan Cowgirls Horse Rescue efforts. Additionally, Jennifer has started a “Horse School” teaching St Croix youth the principles of Natural Horsemanship and general horse management practices. I got to spend the day and then head out on a ride on their first day. I was thoroughly impressed with everything I saw, but especially the pure kindness that emanates from the rescue efforts of her entire family. I’m looking forward to riding again with a group of my girlfriends in a couple of weeks and sharing the experience with them. I’m also honored to now call Jennifer – friend.

A Taste of Christmas Island: Coquito

December 21, 2013 by Cindy @ MyStCroix.VI 2 Comments

There’s nothing like Christmas Island, St Croix, for the holidays – but even that doesn’t replace time with the family so I’ve headed home to New England for a pre-Christmas visit. I’m not a fan of the cold – AT ALL, that’s why I live in the tropics – but I do love the picturesque, snowy scenery out the window of my childhood home. Especially when cozied up by the fire.

coquito in cruzan rum bottle

However, even with all of the hometown comforts, the islands are never far from my heart. So, I decided to share a bit of Christmas Island with family and friends at my Mother’s annual Holiday Open House… Coquito!

Coquito is the Puerto Rican version of eggnog and a staple of St Croix Christmas celebrations thanks to the large Puerto Rican population on the island. Coquito (“little coconut” en Espangnol) is actually fairly easy to make and you’ll find many variants on the basic recipe. Of course, being a Caribbean beverage, one of the main ingredients is rum! It’s typically served chilled, straight up in a glass or over ice, but you can also use it to flavor your coffee, in custards and to top ice cream.

I’m a pinch of this, dash of that gal who goes loosely by recipes and more by taste – so no two batches of mine are exactly alike. Feel free to take this basic recipe and tweak it to your taste.

20131221-093731.jpg

Christmas Island Coquito Recipe

  • 1 Can of Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1 Can of Evaporated Milk
  • 1 to 1 1/2 cans of Coconut Milk (I prefer Goya)
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. Nutmeg
  • Cruzan Rum: Here’s where I really do a dash of this or that. Today’s batch – super yummy – was a 6-count of Cruzan 9 spiced Rum, a splash of Cruzan Vanilla Rum (I needed to empty the bottle to use it) and then I filled the empty can of Condensed Milk with Cruzan Coconut Rum to measure it out.
  • Pour all ingredients into a blender, cover, and blend until frothy. A minute or so.
  • Pour the mixture into an empty rum bottle and chill for at least an hour. You will likely have a little more than a bottle of rum… So if you have an empty jar or pint bottle use that to store it… Or just drink it right away 🙂

I hope you enjoy this little taste of Christmas Island as much as I do! And if you’re on St Croix during the holidays, don’t forget to head out to the LaReine Chicken Shack for their annual Coquito Festival where you’ll get to sample lots of variations and enjoy their world-famous rotisserie chicken too.

Happy Holidays!

St Croix Christmas Boat Parade

December 13, 2013 by Cindy @ MyStCroix.VI Leave a Comment

st-croix-christmas-boat-paradeI still remember my first St Croix Christmas Boat Parade in 2001. I had just moved down to the island the week before and was feeling a bit sad about missing Christmas in New England. That all changed the day I experienced the Boat Parade and realized that St Croix truly is Christmas Island! I remember standing at the Deck Bar on the board walk with a few friends and thinking – Yep, this is where I am meant to be. It was magical.

Follow the My St Croix Facebook Page for Live Coverage

Started in 1999 as a volunteer effort and celebration of the boating culture here in the VI, the St Croix Christmas Boat Parade has become the largest boat parade in all of the Caribbean and it just keeps growing! Volunteers work tirelessly for months putting things together, acquiring sponsorship for the fireworks display and host numerous meetings to ensure that the boat captains know all of the rules and put safety first. Then the boats pull their crews and friends together to go overboard decorating! There are boats with DJs and bands and they really go all out.

Nowadays, its a day-long celebration in the historic town of Christiansted. There are festivities for the kids and and fairs where you can find local made crafts and other goodies for gift-giving. Shops are open in town and there are festivities on the boardwalk throughout the day.

The real show kicks off at dusk when the parade begins with boats decked out in a spectacular display of lights and holiday cheer.

3 My St Croix CountdownMiss Anna’s Hot Sauce

Maine-MissAnnaIf you’ve been out to eat just about anywhere on St Croix, you’ve likely come across Miss Anna’s Hot Sauce on the table. This unique blend of curry, garlic, habanero and spices was originally created by the famed Miss Anna’s grandfather on St. Lucia over 100 years ago as a condiment for his fish. Years later when Miss Anna moved to St Croix with the family-recipe, her hand-crafted hot sauce became an island staple. Today, you can find it in most grocery stores and restaurants in the USVI and I’ve even found it on shelves in Maine! (see picture). This is a great little gift to add to gift baskets for the holidays or as a stocking stuffer for any island enthusiast.

4St Croix Snorkeling Guide
This inexpensive little book is a fun beginner’s guide to snorkeling spots on St Croix. Makes an excellent stocking stuffer or gift for someone planning a trip under the waves of St Croix. Pair it with a gift certificate from St Croix Ultimate Blue Water Adventures for snorkel gear or Dive lessons and you have the perfect water-lover’s gift!

5Christmas Island

Jimmy Buffet may have wrote this in the Florida Keys, but I’m sure he was thinking of the real Christmas Island… St Croix! Our little island in the sun is one of the most festive holiday places I’ve known with the yearly day-after Thanksgiving Jump Up, Christmas Boat Parade, Crucian Christmas Carnival and Three Kings Parade. Download this fun, island-y Christmas Album and you’re sure to get into the Crucian Christmas Spirit!

6Cruzan Rum!Cruzan Rum Lime Buck Island

With almost 20 different flavors and proofs to choose from, you can’t go wrong with a little taste of this island spirit (pun totally intended, I just couldn’t help myself).  Cruzan Rum has been distilled on St Croix by the Nelthropp Family since 1760 (and they are still running the Cruzan Rum Factory so be sure to take a Tour while on St Croix). Pick up a bottle of your favorite flavor or the Aged Single Barrel as a hostess gift when you’re heading out to the next holiday party.

Kickin’ It On St Croix

August 21, 2013 by Cindy @ MyStCroix.VI 1 Comment

Summers on St Croix are much like summer stateside. Things move a bit slower, the tourist hustle and bustle slows down and the kids are out on vacation. It’s actually the perfect time of year to really sit back and enjoy island life. This year, a new summer league popped up and I was so excited – Crucian Kickball! Being a kid at heart and knowing well one of the organizers, Frank (he bartends for my destination wedding business), I decided it was a great opportunity to sponsor a fun team.

And a fun team is certainly what we’ve got! To organize the team, I sent a shout out on my personal Facebook page to see if anyone would be interested and within about 24 hours I had a team pulled together and was almost full. I guess I’m not the only one who reminisces about my elementary school days! Our team is a really diverse group that well represents our island. Coach Kevin, my tennis coach, is Co-Captain along with me and he brought in fellow tennis coach Shane along with a few other athletes. We’ve got Dr. House and his wife Jessica from Island Animal Clinic who brought in two of their techs, Sue & Annie. Teammates include well known local bar keeps, Willy B and Ferris, Roger a local booze supplier and the very talented Chef Aaron. Big Beard’s Captain Caitlin kicks a mean ball along with wildlife biologist Claudia. Sean, Christine, Nichole and Ryan represent EDC businesses and VI Govt. Kelly and Kevin some of the best island photographers have been great supporters. And local sports standouts Kaj, Khyle, Allan and Gus round out our superstars.

Da Bomb SquadWe started out practicing in front of the historic Fort Christianvaern in downtown Christiansted a few Monday nights a week and had a lot of fun. Now we’ve got three games under our belts and have really been coming together as a team.  The games have been a blast and the team spirit and sportsmanship by all of the teams is great. We’re all competitive, but at the end of the day we’re all out there to have fun!

SpectatorsGames are played on Monday nights out at DC Canegata Ball Park at the upper field and are a fun time for players and spectators. On our “bye” week, a bunch of us headed out after a quick practice to cheer on the other teams and got to see the Seaborne Airlines Team win with a last inning run against Balls n’ Dolls. Frank heads up the bar at the field and keeps everyone happy with his tasty rum punch, rum drinks and beer – and the prices are great. Whit who has been organizing the league heads over from St Thomas and keeps us all in check on the field when calls get heated. And the after-party goes on at The Fort Christian Brew Pub with more drink specials. So, if you are on St Croix, swing by the field on a Monday night and cheer on these fun players!

Our Scores so far:

  • Da Bomb Squad vs. Balls n’ Dolls (the Brew Pub Team) Loss 4-7
  • Da Bomb Squad vs. Pitch, Please Win 7-3
  • Da Bomb Squad vs. Balllbarians Win 7-2

Keep Calm and Drink Rum

August 22, 2012 by Cindy @ MyStCroix.VI Leave a Comment

Tropical Storms and Hurricanes are a part of life in the islands. They aren’t something to be particularly fearful of and most often they aren’t much more than an inconvenience. However, they should be taken seriously and preparing ahead can avoid a lot of stress and frustration.  Here are a few of my tips for preparing for hurricanes in the Virgin Islands:

  1. Stay tuned. Monitor the weather forecast during hurricane season and particularly when impending storms are announced. The weather conditions can change quickly!

    • I like to monitor the National Hurricane Center. They update the forecast at 8, 5 and 11 (am and pm) and as storms intensify and approach land they often add a 2am/pm update. This is the source that most other weather services use to create their reports. And we are certainly blessed on St Croix to have the NOAA Hurricane Hunters use our island as their Caribbean base… so when we see those super brave souls in their flight suits, we know there’s a storm brewing.
    • WeatherUnderground.com  is my favorite source for daily and extended weather forecasts, radar and they also have great storm maps that are easy to read.

Find more about Weather in Christiansted, VI
Click for weather forecast

  1. Stay in touch. When storms are about to hit the islands, WAPA (our Water and Power Authority) turns off power for safety purposes. So power outages are inevitable.  Have a battery operated radio to get updates and keep you company during the storm – and be sure to pick up fresh batteries for it and your flashlights. Be sure to fully charge your cell phones, laptops and iPads prior to the start of the storm. While you’re at it, download a few movies onto your laptop or iPad to keep you occupied when the power goes out. Or like me enjoy your time “unplugged” and grab that book you’ve been dying to read.
  2. Be prepared. Have propane for your grill or lighters for your gas stoves. Think of the days without power as “camping” in the comfort of your own home. Stock your pantry with enough non-perishable and canned food for you and your family for several days. (And don’t forget a hand-operated can opener). Have enough water for each family member for 3-7 days. I keep my French Press handy so that even when the power goes out, I can still enjoy a nice cuppa Joe. It’s the little things…

My tea kettle and French Press keep me happy.

  1. Unplug. As soon as the power goes out (or if there has been an announced time that the power will be turned off) I completely unplug all major appliances including my fans, TV and computer battery backup system.  I leave one light on in my bathroom so that when the power finally comes back on, I’m aware. Of course, if you have a reliable generator to power your home, you may not need to take this step. But, I find it has saved a lot of my electronics from power surges.
  2. Keep your cool.I always pack my freezer with as many gallons of water as I can fit ahead of the storm.  These freeze solid and help to keep my freezer cool longer when the power goes out. A couple hours after the power goes out, I put anything in the refrigerator that I need to keep cool (like mayonnaise or yogurt) in the freezer and use it as a super cooler. If I have a lot of food, I pack an actual cooler using one of the frozen water jugs. By keeping the freezer closed and putting things I want to eat in the cooler for easy access, I have a better chance of preventing spoilage over a few days. And when the ice melts, its still usable drinking water.

Frozen water jugs keep essential food cold longer when the power goes out.
  3. Love your Pets. Don’t leave them outside in the storm. Remember that many pets, particularly dogs, can experience severe anxiety due to thunder. We see many pets get lost after storms because they were frightened and left outside. Be sure your pet has tags with your contact information and a microchip as a precaution. But, bring pets inside where they can be safe from the elements. Dogs feel secure in cozy, den-like places under tables or in kennels. Be sure they have plenty of water. If your dog experiences anxiety from thunder and loud noises, consider a Thundershirt for Dog Anxiety Treatment it has worked wonders for my dog!
  4. Keep Calm and Drink Rum! Once you’ve got your property secured and your supplies in place sit back, relax and soothe your nerves with a nice cocktail. Gather your friends together in a safe place and have a hurricane party. That’s half the fun!

Enjoy this recipe from Cruzan Rum as the wind and rain kicks up:

  • 1 part Cruzan Mango Rum
  • 1 part Cruzan Aged Dark Rum
  • Orange Juice
  • Splash of Grenadine

St Croix One Taste at a Time

May 8, 2012 by Cindy @ MyStCroix.VI 3 Comments

A Taste of St Croix isn’t just a gastronomic competition featuring A-list celebrity chef judges each April, it’s a journey through the many flavors that make up the cultural, agricultural and culinary map that is St Croix. It’s a time to celebrate the dining establishments that not only bring in locals and tourists, but bring them back time and time again. And it’s a time to explore new wines, dance and party along a stunning palm-tree  lined Caribbean beach.

This year’s “Taste” at Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort was, in my opinion, one of the best I’ve seen yet! There were so many enthusiastic participants, the decor was fun and fab and the list of celebrity judges was nothing short of impressive. I’d had the chance the day before to briefly meet Chef Govind Armstrong at his book signing at Undercover Books and was excited to catch him before the festivities for a brief interview. When asked what things about St Croix that he liked most so far, he mentioned how wonderful our local growers were at establishing a network with the local restaurants. Earlier in the week, celebrity and participating chefs had a chance to browse a special St Croix Food & Wine Week Farmer’s Market to purchase local produce for their menus. Chef Armstrong was particularly impressed at the abundance, diversity and quality of our fresh local produce and especially in that many growers had asked the restaurants and chefs, prior to the planting season, what they would like to see harvested. By working together the chefs and farmers are creating a new market on St Croix that not only benefits the restaurants, but also visitors and locals (like me!) who frequent our wonderful farm stands.

Chef Armstrong, who grew up in Costa Rica and has traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean, also mentioned that he really loved the landscape and the warm people of our island. He’s looking forward to a return trip with his family where he can take more time to explore St Croix and especially visit and hike through some of our lush green spaces like those at the Virgin Islands Sustainable Farm out West in the rainforest or simply lime on one of our beautiful beaches.

But this night, it was all about the FOOD on St Croix and there’s plenty of it! So enjoy my delicious journey through the event and then go visit some of these great chefs in their natural habitat – find them by exploring our

Bumping into good friends at fun events is Reason #127 why I love St Croix

Taste of St Croix Good to Chew

Taste of St Croix Good to Chew

The events of the St Croix Food & Wine Experience offer a great opportunity for the youth in local high school culinary programs to spread their wings. The kids from St Croix Complex High School’s “Good to Chew’ catering class made a really great showing with their prawn and scallop dish.  The St. Croix Central High School Culinary Arts Class took Second Place in the Dessert category and The Afterschool Cooking Class took First place in the Vegetarian dish category.  I’m happy to say there’s no shortage of great up and coming chefs  in our island’s future!

Local radio personality and restaurateur, Kim Jones, was keeping her tawdry crew in line as they served up some might tasty margaritas and AMAZING hand-made pork and local pumpkin tamales. In fact, Pirate’s Tavern won Second Place Best Appetizer and First Place in the dessert category. (I missed that – dang!)

Art Farm was serving up an INCREDIBLE dairy free icecream that was like a cross between sorbet and gelato with a coconut milk base. They sell it at their weekly farm stand. I can’t wait to bring some home!

Another of my favorite restaurants, Savant, known for their Asian/Mexican/Caribbean fusion and super fresh fish was offering a Thai style soup …

They didn’t take first this year, but they place 2nd with their now named “Second Best” Burger: a delicious combination of fried goat cheese, whiskey-glazed apples, caramelized onions & truffle honey on a hand-crafted Tavern burger. Decadent!! Oh, and they serve it with a side of duck-fat fries.

I had a few more bites left in me, so I headed over to yet another favorite joint on the island….

The party in the Captain’s lounge was in full swing and I got a chance to catch up with Gov. DeJongh for an interview. He – along with Captain Morgan – was excited for the grand opening the following Monday, of the Captain Morgan Experience Center on St Croix.

After the long, grueling day of tasting and reporting, I needed a shot of caffeine and knew
I’d find it at The Bistro’s table. Proprietor Clint Simon was still serving it piping hot with a smile!

Taste of St Croix Tutto Bene

On our way back to the lobby to cover the award announcements, I stopped by Tutto Bene’s table and I was so glad I did! They had an adorable ducky pond incorporated with their famous antipasto. They ended up taking first place for “Best Presentation”.

The St Croix Food & Wine Experience

April 25, 2012 by Cindy @ MyStCroix.VI Leave a Comment

There are no shortage of events and festivals on St Croix, but each year the one I eagerly anticipate the most is the St Croix Food & Wine Experience. Held each April and rated in 2009 by Forbes Magazine as one of the Ten Best International Food and Wine Festivals by Forbes Travel, over the past 12 years it has grown from a one-night event to a weeklong series of educational opportunities and culinary celebrations.

Founded in 2001 by local Restaurateurs and friends Katherine Pugliese {eat @ cane bay} and Kelly Odom {Tutto Bene} as a way to bring the restaurant community together, it started with the anchor event A Taste of St Croix and grew from there. And boy, has it grown! From one night of friendly local competition to a week long series of culinary celebrations and educational opportunities, the St Croix Food & Wine Experience has raised over $500,000 for the St Croix Foundation who then invest the money in local non-profit organizations and island-wide improvement initiatives.

The 2012 week-long list of events heavily tapped into the skills of visiting celebrity chefs. Their participation ranged from judging the culinary competition at A Taste of St Croix to showing off their kitchen skills and acclaimed dishes at various exclusive wine-pairing dinners to teaching and mentoring up and coming chefs in our local high school culinary programs. There were also wine symposiums and events including the Sunset BBQ in Frederiksted, Wine in the Warehouse and Cuisine on the Green. For a full list of events Click Here.

2012 participating chefs and sommeliers included:

  • Govind Armstrong – Owner of Post and Beam  and 8oz Burger Bar. Author of Small Bites, Big Nights: Seductive Little Plates for Intimate Occasions and Lavish Parties. He’s been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Iron Chef America, The Today Show, Top Chef, Top Chef Masters and in Bon Appetit, Gourmet, O Magazine, and People’s 50 Most Beautiful People issue.

  • Eric Greenspan – Owner of  The Foundry and The Roof in LA and co-host of A&E’s “Fix This Kitchen”.  Chef Eric has been featured on “Best Thing I Ever Ate”, “The Traveler’s Guide to Life”, “The Next Iron Chef”n “Bar Rescue”, “Hell’s Kitchen”, “Extreme Chef” and “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution” and beat Bobby Flay on “Iron Chef America”.
  • Roberto Trevino – Owner of Budatai  and Casa Lola in Puerto Rico. Chef Trevino has been featured in Condé Nast Traveler, The New York Times, and Bon Appétit. He competed on the Food Network’s Iron Chef America and rumor has it he’s working on his own television show with Telemundo.
  • Ana Sortun – Owner of Oleana and Sofra Bakery in Cambridge, MA. Chef Sortun was voted “Best Chef in the Northeast” 2005 by the James Beard Foundation

A Taste of St Croix, the event that started it all. You can’t imagine a better Caribbean culinary experience!

A Taste of St Croix is held each year, beachside at the Divi Carina Bay Resort.

Great wine, amazing food, celebrity chefs, dancing and the beach. What more can you ask for?

The events feature an opportunity to taste and explore wines from around the world presented by
local purveyors and often the vintner’s themselves.

One of the things I heard throughout the week from most of the chefs was how impressed they were
by the abundance and quality of locally grown produce here on St Croix.

Visit St Croix and you can enjoy home-grown produce year-round at many of our local restaurants,
at weekly farmer’s markets and sold at roadside farm stands.
Buy Local! It’s fresher, healthier and supports our local economy.

Saving OUR Buck Island: Vote Plan A

March 22, 2012 by Cindy @ MyStCroix.VI 3 Comments

I consider myself truly blessed to have grown up in a family who valued the great outdoors.  As a child, I was exposed to the peaceful, sprawling prairies of Manitoba, Canada; the majestic mountains of British Columbia, Canada; and the historic New England Coastline. With parents and grandparents who took me camping, hiking and exploring, I was able to develop a deep love and appreciation for the environment.

One of the things that had the biggest impact on my falling deeply and madly in love with St Croix was the pristine marine park at Buck Island Reef National Monument. In my first year living on St Croix, I spent considerable time out there working with Big Beards Adventure Tours on the weekends – and when I wasn’t working, I was jumping aboard for the day to snorkel and explore the East End. I love that local families have this incredible resource in their backyard. I love that exposure to this environment can instill the same values of cherishing and protecting the natural world around us in the people that visit Buck Island: once in a lifetime, on a yearly vacation or every weekend with family and friends. But the kind of experience visitors to Buck Island have enjoyed since the park was established in 1961 is being threatened.

The National Park System is preparing to implement a new 20-year park management plan. Currently, there are four options being considered… well, kind of.  Plan A (Our Buck Island‘s preferred plan) is “No Change”. As we understand it, this plan has to be included by law, but isn’t even being considered by the park.  Plan B, NPS’s preferred plan, and the one that we understand that they will be implementing calls for banning all anchoring at Buck Island and constraining boaters (even on the West End) to a limited number of installed moorings. It also calls for the creation of a 5,000 acre restricted zone on the North side of the island.

Attorney Joel Holt’s Presentation at March 21, 2012 Save Buck Island Petition Drive

Breaking it down:

  • President John F. Kennedy established Buck Island Reef National Monument as a National Park by Proclamation No. 3443 of December 28, 1961. In that proclamation declaration, he protected Buck Island for historic and scientific preservation “subject, however, to the condition that the United States, including any agency or instrumentality thereof, shall not adopt or attempt to enforce any rule, regulation or requirement limiting, restricting or reducing the existing fishing (including the landing of boats and the laying of fishpots outside of the marine garden), bathing or recreational privileges by inhabitants of the Virgin Islands, and shall not charge any fees for admission to the area.”
  • Read more at the American Presidency Project: John F. Kennedy: Proclamation 3443 – Establishing the Buck Island Reef National Monument in the Virgin Islands of the United States https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=23992#ixzz1pnuXuSQj
  • On January 17, 2001, President Clinton established Virgin Islands Coral Reef National Monument (VICR) and enlarged and modified Buck Island Reef National Monument (BUIS). Presidential Proclamation Nos. 7399 and 7392, respectively.  The Proclamations give the Secretary limited discretion in what activities and uses she may allow. She must prohibit all extractive uses, but she may allow very limited fishing in two areas at VICR and may permit certain very limited kinds of boat anchoring at BUIS. https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2003/04/04/03-8190/virgin-islands-coral-reef-national-monument-and-buck-island-reef-national-monument
  • Since 2001, by mandate,  boats on the West end of Buck Island have only anchored below the water line (in wet sand).  This protects any potential sea turtle nests on this active nesting beach.  Any laid below the waterline would be flooded and not viable, so anchoring in the wet sand is safe. This is anchoring IN SAND and there have been no studies to show that anchoring in this sand is a problem.  In fact, many would argue that the boaters at Buck Island who do anchor out there in the wet sand are some of the strongest advocates and protectors of the island. They self-regulate, advise new boaters on the rules and protect the environment that we all consider OUR backyard at OUR Buck Island.   “They haven’t done one study to show that anything that’s going on hurts the environment. And if it did, then we’d be the first ones to say – then stop it.” Attorney Joel Holt
  • We are avid environmentalists who want to continue to enjoy Buck Island while protecting the environment.

The current proposed “Plan B” which is the plan that has been publicly stated by Park Superintendent Joel Tutein as the Park Services preferred plan, proposes a prohibition on all anchoring in sand and forcing boats even on the West Beach to be limited to a restricted number of moorings. What this means is that boats will be forced to drop passengers off on the beach and then go out to moorings that are set at a certain distance. Effectively leaving their passengers behind.

NPS BUI Plan B Red Zone

The second objectionable portion of Plan B is the proposed 5,000 acre Marine Park Area on the Northside of the island or “Red Zone” in the image which will restrict all activity in that area to swimming only.  Yep, you read that right, ONLY SWIMMING.  Prohibited activities will include snorkeling, kayaking, paddle boarding, kite surfing, wind surfing and any other green activity besides swimming.  This is some of the most pristine snorkeling and diving area on the island that receives little activity to begin with. But ALL activity will be restricted. The purpose is to protect endangered Elkhorn corals. However, the expansiveness of the 5,000 acres includes a large area of corals that are in waters 100 feet deep. How would this be harmed by paddleboard or snorkelers on the surface?  I found it interesting that last week when Superintendent Tutein and another NPS employee were on the radio and it was brought up by a caller that its SAFER to snorkel in that area with a mask on so that you can see the corals and avoid them – they stumbled a bit on their words. We aren’t asking to drill oil or run jet skis or power boats even. We are asking to retain the right to explore in a mindful, environmentally sound way. We are asking to preserve the rights of the children of the island and residents of the entire nation and the world to have the right to view this magical underwater world.

Its important to note that this isn’t a local issue, this is a national issue because it’s a National Park. YOUR National Park. The park is attempting to limit YOUR usage and ours with no firm reason or study that shows that by implementing these changes they will be protecting something that is currently being harmed by our activities. If that were so, we would be behind them.

Why is this so important?

I think this quote says it best: “In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.” – Baba Dioum, Senegal

By retaining the rights to enjoy this area of the marine park in a low impact way, we retain the ability to teach others about the beauty that is there under the surface. We can help others understand why it is so important to conserve and protect our oceans and the animals that live in it. By sharing the beauty and wonderment of this underwater world, we can share our love of OUR Buck Island. We want to protect the environment, but we also want to enjoy it in a safe and protected way. That’s all we are asking.

What Can You Do to Help?

Download the NPS Public Notice which includes recent frequently asked questions, Public Meeting times & Directions to the meeting location.

So I implore each and every one of you reading this to take action TODAY.  Here’s what you can do to help us:

  1. Put your comments on record with the National Park Service (we need your voices!)
    • Click here to go to the National Park’s Buck Island Plan  https://parkplanning.nps.gov/document.cfm?parkID=357&projectID=11115&documentID=45917
    • Click on “Comment on Document”
    • Share Your Comments. We hope you agree with us and voice your opinion to “Choose Plan A, No Change”
    • Note: On the page, there are download of each section of the plan if you would like to review the information before commenting.
  1. Download, circulate and sign the petition to vote for Plan A.  You don’t have to live on St Croix! If you’ve been to Buck Island or ever plan to go, show your love.
    • Download the Petition Here (English Version)
    • Download the Petition Here (Spanish Version)
    1. How to return completed forms to the “Save Buck Island” Committee:
    2. Drop them off at Centerline Car Rentals in Christiansted or La Reine
    3. Give them to a Save Buck Island Committee Member
    4. Mail them to:  Save Buck Island, 3132 Company Street, Christiansted VI 00820
    5. Or Bring them with you to the Public Hearing on Wed March 28, 2012 and Thurs March 29, 2012
  2. Attend the Public Hearings! Its crucial that we are there in numbers. Unfortunately, these meetings have been scheduled during Spring Break week when many in the boating community are already scheduled to be away. So, if you are here on St Croix, please be sure to come out. National Park representatives from Washington DC will be there.
  • When:  Wednesday March 28 and Thursday March 29 from 6-8 pm
    • Where:  Slave Market (Old Post Office) on Company Street across from the Steeple Building.
    • Free parking will be available in the Fort Christianvaern parking lot for the meeting.
    • We understand that there is only 30 minutes allotted for public comment. So bring a sign to hold up that says “Plan A”!
